CREDIT GUIDE

How to credit music on stream

CC BY 4.0 asks for one thing: tell people whose music it is. Here is where the credit goes and what it should say.

What the line should say

The artist, the licence and a link to it. The shortest version is Music: Purrple Cat, CC BY 4.0. A fuller one names the track and adds the licence link: Music: “Track name” by Purrple Cat (purrplecat.com), licensed under CC BY 4.0 (creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/). If you changed the track (cut, edited), say so.

Where to put it

  • Channel panel or About section, once, so it covers every stream.
  • Video and VOD descriptions on YouTube and wherever you upload highlights.
  • On screen with the overlay, always visible or every few minutes.
  • Chat with a !song command.

Use the generator

The credit line generator makes a version for a panel, a YouTube description, markdown or HTML, for the whole catalogue, a playlist or a single track, and copies it in one click. The player bar has a © button that copies the credit for the song that is playing.

Highlights and clips

Put the credit in the video title or description wherever the clip goes. If the platform has no description field, add it to a pinned comment.

Questions

Do I have to credit every track separately?

No. The generic line “Music: Purrple Cat, CC BY 4.0” covers all of them. Naming the track is nice to have.

Can I credit with a link only?

The licence asks for credit to the creator and a link to the licence. The short line plus the licence name is enough for most platforms.
